My artworks play tricks on me. For all their big talk about ‘harmony’ and ‘abstraction’, they do things like poke me in the eye when I'm trying to plug in my phone. I’ll be standing back to consider a piece, to see if it ‘hangs together’, and another bit will stick out a leg behind me and trip me up. It happens all the time.
They also play tricks with the light, with how they appear. They make claims about symmetry and balance, but it’s all masks. It's not a lie, it's just that the real stories are only seen up close. It’s only obvious when you start talking with them.
I scavenge many objects from the street, magpieing my way along, in this old life. Maybe it's a nostalgic attempt at living off the land, as my friend Sam puts it. Maybe I’m just a sentimentalist (and tbh I’m running out of space to store things) but honestly these sad little objects call out to me. It's a kind of whimpering voice. They are asking to speak.
But don’t get me wrong, it's not a weak voice. In that moment it's not an act. It's a voice burdened. There is a weight of time in it. A tone of one too many things seen, my boy. Dust in the edges. Crouching at the corners of itself, desperate to pounce again, like an existential jack-in-a-box.
They are caught in their own loops, and I introduce those loops to more loops and the loops become object-poems. The punch lines of which are never quite clear.

Even to me.
